"Stylish and elegant"
2023 season review
29th January 2023
Socker Sucker is a stylish place with all their creations on display under a glass counter, carefully lined up in threes and sat on square cardboard bases.
My four semlors were placed into a cardboard box and each base was held in position with a little piece of sticky tape. No risk of these semlors sliding into each other!
It was another nicely sized semla. You might call it medium, but it's the size I think they should be. The cream is almost as high as the bun. The almond paste is just peeking out from under the perfectly piped swirl of cream and just a few extra chopped salted caramelised roasted almonds have been scattered on top of the cream, mostly hidden under the round lid.
The bread is fresh, soft, with a touch of crushed cardamom. There's a generous amount of almond paste, which you easily reach on the first bite. The paste is thick and grainy and not overly sweet. The roasted almonds in the paste shine through, with a tang of cardamom that comes through stronger as an aftertaste.
The cream was creamy (which sounds odd, but it's not always the case!) and held its piped shape perfectly from shop to plate. Only to be destroyed as I squeeze it and bite 😊 a very good semla indeed.
