"York goes nuts for semlor!"
2025 season review
1st February 2025
About 6.5cm wide, and about 7cm tall. Weighing 145g. It's a small-medium semla.
Dainty little Semla. The bun is very very fresh and soft to the touch.
The cream is just whipped to the point where it's pretty much holding it's shape and perched on top is a lovely round lid.
Under the round lid, there's plenty of paste, and plenty of almonds peeking out too! Roasted salted almonds.
There no doubt just from looking at this semla that you're going to get cream, paste, and bun on the first bite!
And you do. In every bite. The size and proportions mean you get all three throughout.
There are fantastic amounts of freshly ground cardamom. It really shines through, hanging along during the entire eating experience.
The pasty is nutty, with a ground almond grittiness to it and not overly sweet. On top of the paste are numerous roasted salted almonds, some of them whole, some of them chopped. I think that all in all there are absolutely every grade of chopped almond that's possible in this semla!
With the exchange rate at the moment, this £6 semla comes out as 82kr which makes it the most expensive semla I've ever had by quite a margin!
It is though the best semla I've had in the UK and would stand it's ground in Sweden. Excellent to see more bakeries in York (and the UK!) producing semlor
