"Genuinely enjoyable"

A semlor placed on a white round plate on a black stone surface. There are a lot of icing-sugar dusted roughly chopped almonds visible stuck to the almond paste. On top is a large swirl of very smooth cream piped in a anti-clockwise swirl using an open star piping tip. A round icing-sugar covered lid is perched on top. The bottom of the bun is slightly wrinkled and dots of cardamom can be seen.

I bought a large semla from Konditori Genuin, and it lives up to its billing, checking in at 191g. It's a little lop-sided. The leaning tower of Semla! At 9.5cm wide, the bun is broad, resulting in a large surface area covered with paste and roughly chopped nuts.

The nuts at first glance appear to be plain, roughly-chopped Valencia almonds. The bun has specks of cardamom, as does the paste. The paste is a classic, light, beige colour.

The cream looks perfectly whipped and has been piped with an open star tip. The swirl is smaller in diameter than the paste, which leaves the filling clearly visible and reachable.

On tasting, it's creamy cream and the almonds reveal themselves as lightly roasted. Genuin made a traditional semla. It's enjoyable but safe. There's slightly too much cream, and slightly too little cardamom. The bun is also slightly drier than it could be.

The slightly roasted nuts do actually combine quite well with the paste, giving it a nice crunch and just a touch of roasted flavour. Towards the end, there were a few mouthfuls where it did, nevertheless, just taste of bun and cream.
