"Still nailed the chain"

A very tall semla sat on a beige glazed ceramic plate. The bun has visible kernals of cardamom and almond paste. On top of the almond paste is a covering of chopped almonds of various grades. There is a tower of cream, piped upwards in a wiggle rather than a swirl. On top sits a circular lid dusted in icing sugar.

2026 season review

Weight 164 g Size medium-large Price 63 kr

This time, eaten in-store at their location on Kungsgatan. I'm classing it as a medium-large semla, as height-wise it's massive, width-wise it's large.

It's weight is surprisingly low for such a large semla. Perhaps because the height it mainly from the tower of cream. I've had large semlor this size that have had at least twice as much cream piped on.

They really are good chain semlor. All the essentials are there - so far that holds true no matter which location I visit, which is the proper test of a bakery-chain semla.

There is cardamom in the bun, but they also add crushed cardamom to the paste (something I do too), which really lifts the flavour making the cardamom stand out. The sprinkling of nuts (which are a mix of everything from whole ones to finely chopped ones) gives the filling both crunch, taste and a visual impact.

The cream is creamy and keeps its shape (but looks a little over whipped).

The price isn't a bargain, pricing itself above many artisan bakeries this season, but if that's the price for consistency across over 20-plus locations, perhaps it's worth it. 4/5.
